Chapter 10 Sexual and Gender Identity Disorder Sexual Dysfunctions Johnson’s book, The Human Sexual Inadequacy (1970) and Janus Report (1993) are important. I. The Sexual Response Cycle The Human sexual response cycle includes four phases: 1. The Appetitive Phase – a person shows desire for sexual activity. Dysfunction in this phase is called sexual desire disorder. 2. The Excitement Phases – Specific and direct sexual stimulation occurs. Increase in heart rate, blood pressure and respiration and noted. Males have erection. Dysfunction in this phase is called sexual arousal disorder. 3. The Orgasm Phase – Dysfunction in this phase is called orgasm disorders. 4. The Resolution Phase – Relaxation after the orgasm. Dysfunctions due to pain are called dyspareunia and vaginismus . Classification of Sexual Dysfunctions 1. Sexual Desire Disorders a. Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder b. Sexual Aversion Disorder 2. Sexual Arousal Disorder a. Frigidity (Female Sexual Arousal Disorder) b. Impotency (Male Erectile Disorder) 3. Orgasm Disorder a. Female orgasmic Disorder b. Male Orgasmic Disorder c. Premature Ejaculation 4. Sexual Pain Disorder a. Dyspareunia – genital pain in both sexes.

b. Vaginismus – Involuntary spasm of Vagina. Etiology and Treatment of Sexual Dysfunctions Sexual dysfunction may be due to psychological factors or a combination with biological (biogenic or physical) factors. 1. Lower levels of testosterone or high levels of estrogen have been associated with low sexual interest in both sexes and erectile problems in males. Drugs that suppress the level of testosterone seem to decrease sexual desire in men. High blood pressure also decreases desire in men. Surgical
