Chapter 1 Overview *Psychology- seeks to describe, explain, modify, and predict human and animal behavior *Neuropsychology- a subspecialty of psychology is the study of how complex properties of the brain allow behavior to occur Neuropsychologists study relationships between brain functions and behaviors. Neuropsychologists lead the study of brain-behavior relationships and are involved in the design and development of technologies to treat diseases of the brain. They are involved in patient care & research on the brain, work in universities, research institutes, hospitals, correctional facilities, the armed forces, and private practice. I. The Brain in Antiquity: Early Hypotheses Trephination- is an ancient surgical operation that involves cutting, scraping, chiseling, or drilling a pluglike piece of bone from the skill. a. Hippocrates *(460-377 B.C.), a Greek physician honored as the founder of modern medicine . He was the first to recognize that paralysis occurs on the side of the body opposite to the side of head injury. b.
