T his was not always true . In fact, both areas were often rocked by racial tension. This tension often gave rise to violence. Whites in these areas had a common sense of arrogance. They believed themselves to be superior to blacks and did not feel any qualms about making the blacks feel unwelcome. The whites often used violence to establish their superiority. The west and south both provided raw materials for northeast manufacturing . So either way back then whites felt superior and made the blacks feel basically like they were nothing.
