HIST 5010 Discussion Review: 5-11 September David J. Litteral The discussions for this week centered around three questions. The first had to do with the differences or similarities between Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy. Most of the members of the class preferred to state that both Ike and JFK believed in a strong need for containment of the communist threat. The analogy of dominoes is often used to describe what would happen if a free country fell to communism, followed by another, and then another, until the communists ruled the world. Ike was focused on the Middle East and Kennedy was focused on fledgling democracies that he propped up. Likewise, my fellow students and agreed on the method that each of the presidents used to prosecute their portion of the Cold War. It was generally felt that Ike had a strong sense of right and wrong and relied on facts as he knew them. He didn’t go for the hype or try to sensationalize to the American people or their Congress.
