Thomas Lennemann Summary for Week 7 Dr. Coumbe History 5010 Vietnam on Trial Draft The selective service system had too many loopholes for those who did not want to serve and could afford to get out of Vietnam. The authors believed the major reason the draft was inefficient was socio-economic and not race based. Since the least educated were those who were drafted this was the main cause of the My Lai massacre. Calley was picked from this group, he was one of those who enlisted only to avoid the draft. The uneducated forces leave the possibility of either not knowing the rules of combat or being unable to understand the rules of combat. It was just a bad situation waiting to happen. The country was fat on fighting aged young men due to the baby boom. The affluent gained waivers for college or National Guard/Reserve status. The lowest educated soldiers went to combat arms jobs rather than support jobs. They were loyal and followed without question. Those at My Lai were in a delicate state of mind. Responsibility
