Thomas Lennemann Summary for Week 9 Dr. Coumbe History 5010 Gunboat Democracy Press The book describes the invention of the media pool and the major complaints of censorship by the press. The real analysis of the transition of media occurs during the Gulf War. While media was still catching up to the global news cycle, it really had not till the Gulf War. Up till then the Pentagon and government still had somewhat of a leash on what was reported. The author points out the Weinberger commission that recommended the media should not be a lap dog, nor an attack dog. The media during the Dominican invasion was used as a patsy. In Grenada the media reported the redirection of the Atlantic Fleet that foiled the element of surprise. CNN began in 1980 and changed America to a 24 hour new cycle. Panama was kept quiet until the large amount of pizzas delivered to the Pentagon. In US/Latin American policy issues the media played a passive role. The media only reacted to situation, never promoting but quick to condemn. Grenada
