Spector Annotated Bibliography Spector, Ronald H.,  Advice and Support, The Early Years of the U.S. Army in  Vietnam 1941-1960 , The Free Press, 1985 Some might believe that the Vietnam War began in the 1960’s.  As Ronald  Spector points out in  Advice and Support  the American involvement within the  internal conflict in Vietnam began much earlier.  Spector touched on the history  of conflict on the peninsula in Southeast Asia.  Constant invasion by the Chinese  found a Vietnam in constant battle to expel their invaders.  In the mid nineteenth  century, France had colonized Southern Vietnam and by the collapse of the  French in World War II, the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh began a revolution to  remove their colonizers.  Ho Chi Minh had trained in the Soviet Union during the  1920’s, learning the communist philosophy.  The effort against the French begat  the communist revolution in the area. 1
