I guess they could not wait until August 15 th .  An agreement between the Soviet  Union and the United States at the Yalta Conference was for Russia to join the  war against Japan within three months after the European War.  Again at the  Potsdam Conference, Stalin stated the plan was for the Soviets to invade  Manchuria on August 15 th .  The Soviets jumped the gun and invaded on August  8, 1945.  The reasons for the early invasion are detailed in J. Samuel Walker’s  book,  In his book, Walker proposes historical evidence proves that popular views are in  fact myths as to the reasons behind dropping the atomic bomb. 1   Detailed are  reasons laid out by Truman and his advisors include:  (1) The goal of continuing  FDR’s policy of winning the war with the lowest cost in American lives. 2
