Brief outline of Citino Preface and Chapter 1 Preface Q: Is there a German way of war? Which Germany and which period? What defines Germany? How do we define a historical German way of war? How do we feel about the ideas of “kurts and vives” (short and lively) or die Macht in in der Mitte (the power in the center of Europe) Germany could not afford a long war in manpower or in treasury Did operational war begin with the elder Helmuth von Moltke? Terminology: Operational meaning-movement and command of large units, whole armies, divisions, etc. Tactical —small unit operations, companies, battalions Strategica l-larger military-political planning Bewegungskrieg —the war of movement, rapid, surprise attacks, flank or rear Q2: the worst in logistics and intelligence? What about the Prussian centered focus of Citino? How do we feel about that? Quote to consider 1: When talking about the German war machine of the Imperial Period-“The existence of such an apparently invincible military machine went a long way toward keeping Europe in a nearly permanent state of diplomatic crisis during those years.” Citino’s emphasis “on action rather than theory, on actual operations rather than doctrine.” xvii
