Week 3 German History Outline Malone Greatest change of the German military and for the German people prior to the unification of Germany was the French Revolution through the Napoleonic Wars. These changes were not gradual but in fact very abrupt and lead to a new order not only in Europe but in Germany as a whole. With the French Revolution and the wars with Napoleon many of the ideas of the revolution would spread. While most of these would be suppressed and in many cases violently, the real reforms, the ones that would stick or at least remain while the Napoleonic wars were fought were among the military. The battle of Valmy should have been an indication that the Prussian army was in need of reform, that it was no longer the instrument that Frederick the Great had once wielded. At this battle the steady Prussian Infantry was unable to make any gains against Revolutionary Frances mass conscripted forces. Relying on the traditions of Frederick the Great and the reputation of this great commander and his army the Prussians entered into the Fourth Coalition against Napoleon with the thought that they would be able to easily defeat the
