Technology was the most important aspect of warfare in the late  19th Century. In regards to the question, technology was vital to the  expansion of the army to the massive sizes. Citino states, "The  growth of industry allowed military forces to expand to unheard-of  size."(148) The introduction of the “needle gun”, a bolt action firing mechanism
