History 142 Lecture February 7, 2008 Mauryan Empire- first real Indian empire Third emperor was Buddhist (first Buddhist king or empire ever) Gupta Empire- other early Indian empire Buddhism and Jainism- (heterodox) Both highly revolutionary religions Emerged approximating 5 th century BC Heterodox religions o Because the do not recognize god/ or authority of vedas o Not interested in any priesthood Second urbanization o Breaking away from rural patterns Achaemenids- Persian empire Really important super power 6 th century BC Jaspers- philosopher (founder of exatensilism) Maggadah- very important state First emergence of Buddhism Buddha Not concerned with changing society, or Brahmans Interested in nirvana/ personal salvation We know very little about him except that he reached “enlightenment” Pessimistic thinking- life on earth is not a goal in itself Had cure for suffering we all had to put up with in this world o That Cure being enlightenment
