Chapter 7-Whats Up?
1. Communication is the exchange of messages whether they are verbal or nonverbal.
2. Effective communication is when the sender and receiver have the same understanding of the
intended message.
3. Two-way communication is generally more effective than one-way communication because
two-way communication provides an opportunity for both parties to correct mistakes and
misunderstandings through feedback.
4. Nonverbal communication is communicating through facial expressions, eye contact, body
language, and tone of voice.
5. Three different types of barriers to communication are:
a. Physical barriers are any disturbing factor in the physical environment or your body
that can prevent full communication such as a noisy room.
b. Mental barriers are what you interpret from previous knowledge or experiences that
can affect how you communicate such as selective attention.
c. Emotional barriers are the feeling and emotional barriers that create obstacles in
communicating such as being stressed or angry.
