The difference between a formal group and an informal group is an informal group is a loose association of people without stated rules and formal groups has clear goals and established rules. 2. The cooperative goals of a basketball team might be to play better as a team and win more games and the competitive goals might be that each player is competing with the others for a certain position on the team. 3. Norms are the rules by which people in particular roles or positions are expected to behave. 4. The chain is a communication pattern in which messages are passed down from the higher ranks to the lower ranks and occasionally in the other direction. The wheel is a communication pattern in which one person at the hub communicates with each group member on the spokes, but the members do not communicate with each other. The all-channel is a communication pattern in which each member communicates freely with each member. 5. Conformity is changing your opinion or behavior in response to pressure from a group. 6. Groupthink is a special type of conformity that sometimes arises when a group is very cohesive and its members are very loyal to one another. 7. People generally observe quietly when they first join a new group because they are trying to understand the group’s goals, roles, and norms. 8. An agenda is a list of topics to be discussed in a meeting and the purpose is to follow the
