Steven Paul W201095728 ENGL 1302-51401 M/W 2-3:30 Questions to Consider for Thank You for Smoking What kind of rhetorical strategies (appeals, fallacies , etc…) does Nick Naylor use to win his arguments? (Note his use of the Straw Man and Red Herring fallacies in his ice cream talk with Joey) 1. Logical appeals (logos): Theorize about cause and effect with the use of character with cancer at the beginning of the film; citing commonly held beliefs and evidence that smoking is harmful to one’s health; and when he points out that all products that are potentially harmful should be labeled. 2. Emotional Appeals (pathos): Using repetition in the dialogue such as “only for the mortgage” or “it’s my job to be right.” Or when he begins to speak about how education and parenting should be the foundation for young people to learn about the dangers of tobacco, 3. Ethical Appeals (ethos): He is the vice president of the Academy of Tobacco studies and he gives seemingly legitimate arguments when defending the tobacco companies. 4.
