Religion Exam 1 Review 1. Theology- reflection on religion, usually undertaken by those already committed to a religious system. Theology seeks to understand a religion in terms that will communicate its teachings to a specific audience. Theology will take on different shapes at different times. 2. Catechesis- Introduction to faith for those predisposed to it. Prayers, Mass, how to worship. Driver’s Ed for Catholics. 3. Religious Studies-Religion as a phenomenon or an event/action that can be studied or observed. 4. Totem- Hunting and gathering societies often have a special relation with a particular animal, such as a bear, wolf or snake. Such an animal is called a totem. The totem is treated with special reverence that seems to bear some of the marks of religion. Relation to the totem serves to bind a people to its ancestors, as well as to a common set of meanings and life-styles. 5. Taboo- Often the violations of customs associated with the totem are considered forbidden or taboo. 6. Panvitalism- the perception that all things are alive. Living things and persons borrow the energy to live from this environing life-force. 7. Shaman- Siberian, designating one who seems to have special capacity for “ecstasy” for going beyond the bounds of ordinary life and entering into a realm apart. 8. Symbol (vs. sign)- A symbol is a representation of something. A sign is something that stands for an abstract thing. 9.
