Homework Samson Hsieh English 104 Just Walk on By Brent Staples 1. Staples in my opinion begins his paragraph with “my first victim,” implies that he was thought of as a mugger, criminal, or even a murderer. He came to understand how his image fits in the descriptions of the many young African Americans who commit most of the crimes on the streets. What better way to start off by tricking the audience into thinking he was a mugger, a criminal, or a murderer? The vibe that that sentence gives to the audience, not only allows the reader to question but to visualize it as well, which is one of the best ways to start off an essay. 2. It is said that people will not truly understand fear unless they experience it themselves first hand. In his writing, Staples became “thoroughly familiar with the language of fear.” When a young woman ran from him (Page 157 paragraph 1), simply because his appearance fits the descriptions of all the bad people in the
