Nacos and Torres-Reyna “Muslim Americans in the News Before and After 9/11” How have major American news organizations reported on Muslim Americans pre 9/11 and post 9/11? What is relationship between news media and commercial entertainment (Hollywood)? Typecasting and stereotyping (e.g., suicide bombers, religious fanatics, chauvinist, perpetrators of violence) We depend on news to gain information about public affairs and for cues to frame and interpret information. Media Frames : influence topics, sources, language, photographs, coverage of events and issues, and political actors are placed in a framework of understanding. A media frame: operates to select and highlight some features of reality and obscures others in a way that tells a consistent story about problems, their causes, moral implications, and remedies. Framing Patterns: Network coverage of terrorism in 1980s episodic and narrowly focused, rather than thematic and contextual Narrowly focused media coverage : viewers more likely to hold individuals
