Mantsios- Media Magic: Making Class Invisible Media a powerful institution in its influence to shape public consciousness : defining cultural tastes, helping us locate ourselves in history, establishing our national identity, framing understandings of the nature of society, and what is possible in social and political sphere. Unlike other socializing institutions, the Media’s ownership and control is concentrated in the hands of a few, reducing the diversity of media messages. Media hides gross inequities from public view, obscuring the nature of class realities and blaming the victim of a classed society for own plight. Media Messages about the Poor 1. The Poor do not exist 2. The Poor are faceless (focus on poverty rate and numbers over human suffering)
