~ 3 ~ I. Introduction : In this experiment we will study the properties of how an image is formed through a thin lens. We are going to measure the focal lengths of two different converging lenses and measure the image distances as well as observe the how the image is formed. (Upside down, right side up etc.). We will confirm the validity of the thin lens equation using our measured distances. Also in this experiment, we will measure the focal length of a diverging lens. Experimental Set-up : For the experiment we will need two converging lenses of difference focal lengths, a diverging lens, the optical bench for measuring distances, a light source with image imprinted to cast a shadow, and a ruler for measuring the height of the real image projected as well as the actual image. Experimental Procedure : Procedure (1): Measurement of Focal Length of a Converging Lens. 1. The first step we took in this experiment was finding the focal length of the converging lens. We walked into the hallway with our optics bench, set it on a cart near one end of the hallway outside of the laboratory, and set up the lens so that light from the opposite side of the hallway would pass through the lens and onto the screen. 2. Next we moved the lens back and forth until we could see a clear image of the window at the opposite end of the hallway. When this image became clear, we knew that this was
