~ 3 ~ I. Objective : During this experiment, we will observe the effects of static electricity. We will also investigate induced charge distribution and electrostatic induction. The objects will be charged by friction, charging by contact, and charging by induction. The actual charge will be displayed on the computer using the charge sensor. Method : Method: The ice pail (C.) was set up in accordance to the experiment procedure. Before we started the first section, we also took our jackets off to prevent unwanted friction. A. Charge measurement and conservation. 1. We took the charge producers (E.) and touched them both to the outside of the ice pail apparatus. We did this so that we could get rid of any existing charge that was on the Sticks. 2. Next, we took the charge producers and rubbed them together several seconds and placed the white one into the center mesh area of the ice pail. We each watched the output displayed on the computer screen and took notes. 3. When the white disk was taken out of the center mesh, the blue charge producer was put into the mesh to watch its charge. Both steps 2 and 3 were done rather quickly as to not lose charge on the sticks.

After making notes on our observations in step 3, we again touched the charge producers to the outer mesh to discharge them, discharged the sensor, and ourselves touched the outside mesh to ground out. 5. With everything grounded out, we again rubbed the charge producers together, only this time we touched the blue stick to the inside of the center mesh. We recorded our observations. 6. Finally, we removed the blue stick from the mesh and inserted the white stick and touched the inside of the mesh. The observations were then recorded on paper. B. Induced Charge on a Conductor 1. For the induced charge, we connected one of our aluminum spheres to the red, +3000v terminal of the power supply. For this process, we made sure the power supply was in the off position, and unplugged. 2.
