To gain a facility with the concepts and techniques of linear algebra. 2. To build a strong foundation in linear algebra as preparation for subsequent courses in mathematics and engi- neering. 3. To continue to nurture the students ability in analytic thinking and problem-solving. Course Text: Contemporary Linear Algebra , by Howard Anton and Robert C. Busby (Wiley, 2003) Teaching Mode: Four lecture hours/week. One lab hour/week. Evaluation: 30% Test 1 (Rooms TBA); Friday, October 16, 2009, from 4 PM. 30% Test 2 (Rooms TBA); Friday, November 20, 2009, from 4 PM. 30% Test 3 (Date and Rooms TBA); During the examination period December 7-19, 2009. 10% Lab. MTH 141 COURSE CONTENT 1 Chapter 1 : Vectors (Sections 1, 2, 3) 2 (approx. 6 hours) Chapter 2 : Systems of Linear Equations (Section 1, 2) (approx. 4 hours) Appendix B : Complex Numbers (approx. 2 hours) Chapter 3 : Matrices and Matrix Algebra (Sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) (approx. 12 hours) Chapter 4 : Determinants (Sections 1, 2, 3, 4) (approx. 8 hours) Chapter 6 : Linear Transformations (Sections 1, 2, 3, 4) (approx. 8 hours) Chapter 7 : Dimension and Structure (Sections 1, 9, 11) (approx. 4 hours) Chapter 8 : Diagonalization (Sections 1, 2) (approx. 4 hours) 1 Changes to, and clarifications of, details in this course outline/course management form (such as room numbers for tests) will be announced to the class on at least two different occasions before they take effect (except in unavoidable emergencies which permit only one announcement)....
