Miles Meyer 2/24/08 EEB 187-2 Discussion Critique #5 I. What question or hypothesis did the authors address? The authors questioned whether males reduce intrasexual competition by  prolonging mating.  They two hypotheses they tested were the extended  mate guarding and the ejaculate transfer hypothesis. II. Why is it interesting? A. Why do the authors say it is interesting? The author states that females of many taxa mate with numerous  males, and those males have devised ways of reducing the sexual  competition among them to further increase their reproductive  success. B. Do you agree?  Is it interesting from other angles as well? I agree that it is interesting to see how males can increase their  chances of reproductive success by limiting the time other males have  to copulate with a female, or by trying to store ing  more of their  sperm in them. C. Should the authors have also asked other questions? The author should have asked whether males which are cannibalized  have a greater chance of paternity, or if the female will continue to  copulate after cannibalizing a male.  For this question they would  probably need to study a spider which cannibalizes its mates more  frequently. Do you think that could be another study altogether? III. Methods. A.   Did the authors tell you everything you needed to know to repeat their  study? Besides the method of capture and randomization of males to female’s  nests, the authors were very detailed in their description and overview of  their experimental procedures. B.  Study species, study site, collection sites, and experimental lab locations
