What general statements can you make about the expansion of the settlement frontiers in the United States and Canada? The European settlers generally stayed along the eastern coastlines, as they looked toward Europe. As expansion began, settlers generally stayed along waterways as easy routes back to the ocean. It wasn’t until the country turned away from Europe and toward North America in the 19 th century that more rapid settlement west began. Chapter 3, Review Question #4 (page 62).
