Miles Meyer 1/25/08 EEB 187-2 Gowaty Discussion Critique #2 I. What question or hypothesis did the authors address? Do female monogamous birds such as the black legged kittiwake obtain material benefits by trading copulations for nutrients and other resources? II. Why is it interesting? A. Why do the authors say it is interesting? The authors find it interesting because females of many species are known  to copulate more than necessary to fertilize their eggs.  Males also copulate  frequently only because they increase their reproductive success by doing  so, but it is unknown exactly why a female would copulate more than  necessary to achieve fertilization. B. Do you agree?  Is it interesting from other angles as well? I think the authors’ question is interesting, and it is also interesting to know  if these birds did copulate for material benefit, if there are is  any  copulations going on when there is an abundance of resources.  C. Should the authors have also asked other questions? The authors should also have asked if there was any cost to the females by  allowing courtship and copulation from the males. Good. I believe the   authors assume that there is a cost to extra-female copulations, but I   wonder what it is if the males are non-aggressive? III. Methods. A.   Did the authors tell you everything you needed to know to repeat their study? The authors included about all the pertinent information to replicate their  experiment, but they did not specify how the birds were captured for banding, what  times their nests were checked, and how they randomized the nest sites to the  experimental or control group. Good observation.  B.
