Lab IV: Membranes and Cell Structure Informal Lab Report Biology 115 Lab Section 03 Sara Martinson Part One – Dialysis 1. For this experiment, a negative control of distilled water was used. It was a negative control because when the solutions used to test for the presence of certain molecules was added to the water, no reaction was observed. 2. Sodium Chloride, Glucose was able to pass through the “cell membrane” while proteins and starches were not. The sodium chloride and glucose both appeared to pass through at the same due to the fact that the Silver Nitrate tested positive in both the 50 and 100 minute tubes. The glucose test of Benedict’s solution also tested positive in both the 50 and 100 minute tubes. Based on the observations, it would seem that the dialysis tubing let through the smaller and simpler molecules as compared to the bigger and more complex starches and proteins. Part Two – Osmosis
