Biology Informal Lab Report Lab XII – GM food and gel electrophoresis Sara Martinson December 2, 2010 Part C 1. Electrophoresis is an effective method for comparing unknown DNA band fragments with known DNA fragments. 2. During gel electrophoresis, an electrical current is run through the agarose gel and DNA fragments travel along. Since the DNA fragments have a negative charge, when placed in the negative end of the gel, it moves from the negative end to the positive end of the gel according to the electrical current. As it moves through the porous gel, different size fragments move more quickly than others. The smaller the fragments, the quicker it travels and therefore the father it travels. Larger fragments take a longer time to pass through the gel and therefore do not travel as far. 3. The molecular weight standard is used as comparison bands to the samples. It is used to identify the approximate size of molecule run on a gel. (Wikipedia) 4. Lane
