Lecture Learning Objectives: Unit 1 Ch. 1 Introduction, Process of Science, Unity and Diversity of Life 1. You should be able to explain/recognize what is meant by the term ‘biology’, and be able to list/describe/recognize the characteristics of all living organisms. (i.e., What does it mean to be ‘alive’.?) 2. You should be able to explain/recognize the sequence of structural organization found in biology and what it means to say that each level of this sequence has emergent properties. 3. You should be able to list/recognize/identify the 3 domains and 4 kingdoms of living organisms (or 6 kingdoms) and identify/give examples of members of each group. 4. You should be able to explain/recognize the differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. 5. You should be able to list/recognize the categories of taxonomic groupings, from most inclusive to most exclusive. You should be able to explain/recognize how an organism’s scientific name relates to its specific epithet and its genus name, and know the correct manner by which the scientific name of an organism is written. 6. You should be able to explain/understand/recognize how discovery science and hypothetico-deductive science differ, what inductive and deductive reasoning are, and how inductive and deductive reasoning relate to these types of science. 7. You should be able to explain/list the steps of the scientific process, and be able to explain/recognize the strengths and limitations of the scientific method. You should be able to explain/recognize what is meant by the term ‘Theory’. You should be able to propose and explain an experimental design for studying a specific research question. Note: This is a "higher-level" type of question that takes you well beyond the normal "rote memorization" level of understanding. To some extent I would expect you to be achieve at this level of understanding for many of the objectives on this list. .. I just can't realistically list all such high-level objectives here and am just using this as an example. 8. You should be able to list/explain/recognize the ten unifying principles of biology. 9. You should be able to explain/describe/recognize the Cell Theory, and the roles of Hook, van Leeuwenhoek, Schleiden, and Schwann in the discovery of cells and the development of the Cell Theory. 10.
