Metaethics Paper Sara Martinson Commands Lead to Right and Wrong Valdemar Setzer said, “Ethics is not definable, is not implementable, because it is not conscious; it involves not only our thinking, but also our feeling.” Can what Valdemar said be right and wrong? For centuries people have been living by a series of ‘rules’ on how to live their lives. Where these rules come from has been an unanswered question for just as long. Is morality concerned with culture or is morality concerned with God? God’s commands are what make something right or wrong. Thousands of years ago God worked through writers and prophets to get out his word as a way to live our lives through a book we know today as the Bible. The Bible is full of statements, we should do this or we should not do that, which help every day people now live a life that is good and pleasing to God. “As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus,” 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2. Everywhere we look in the Bible there are clues as to how to live a God-pleasing life. God’s commands are commands for morality in our everyday lives. Genesis 1:1 begins, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…” in this sense would it not make sense that God also created everything else, not just the plants, animals and humans. He created the world ex nihilo, or out of nothing. From him we became everything that we are today. Divine Command Theorists believe that morality is a product of God’s works. They view the things that are right as a portion of God’s will. If something must be done, then it must be

done according to God’s will. Things that are considered ‘right’ are commanded by God and things that are considered ‘wrong’ are forbidden by God. As we look through our society today we can look at the things that everyone as a whole views as right and wrong. Murder, adultery
