Title: In the Path of Destruction By Sara Martinson Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the dangers of thunderstorms and how to be prepared. Thesis: In order to protect yourself from deadly thunderstorms and tornadoes, it is important to understand what they look like, how they develop and what to do to be prepared. Organizational Pattern: Topical I. Introduction A. Attention Getter: According to the National Severe Storms Laboratory, a project of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA, some 1,000 tornadoes destroy the United States each year killing up to 60 people. While many might argue that those numbers don’t sound entirely significant, living in the area known as Tornado Alley may spark more concern. B. In honor of Severe Weather Awareness week which is happening this week, I thought it would be best to give you all just a little more information about what really happens when dark clouds roll into town. C. Learning about how thunderstorms develop, the main types of storms out there, the damage they can produce, and how to be prepared in both our lives and our faith lives is an important thing to know as it just might save yours. Transition: Let’s begin with how storms develop. II. Body A. According to Riley O’Connor, meteorologist for Storm Team 4 KTIV news station, there are three main ingredients needed for a thunderstorm to develop: moisture, instability and lift. 1. If all three are present a thunderstorms life cycle will go through three stages. a. In the developing stage, clouds will begin to tower indicating rising air. This stage lasts for about 10 minutes. b. The mature stage is when most damage occurs. Here, things such as hail,
