The course content covers market structure and trade execution, client characteristics and their effect on portfolio construction, the asset allocation decisions, the security allocation decisions, market efficiency and trading strategies, and the use of option and futures contracts to manage the risk. In addition, selected topics related to portfolio risk management and emerging field of behavioral finance will be discussed throughout the course. Course Learning Outcomes: It is expected that the course will help students understand the underlying principles of security valuation and portfolio management, and will provide them the necessary background to enter the investment industry or related fields. Students should be familiar with net present value concept and dividend discount models, accounting statements, and basic statistical methods (including regression analysis). It is expected that everyone will be able to download data from the web and use spreadsheets to analyze it. At the end of the course students should be able to develop and use successful decision-making strategies, and possess analytical skills necessary to make effective and efficient investment decisions in a global business environment. Required Materials/Resources: Text book : Investments with Excel spreadsheets , by Bodie, Kane, and Marcus, 2009, McGraw-Hill International Edition (ISBN: 007 127828-7) Financial Calculator : you are not required to use financial calculators in my classes except during the exams but you may need to bring your laptops for those classes that require problem solving using Excel applications. 1
