Computers Main Vs. Secondary Memory Main memory, “stores data and information and is usually volatile, its contents are lost when the power is turned off. It plays a major role in the computers performance” (Bidgoli, 2010). Secondary memory, “which is nonvolatile, holds data when the computer is off or during the course of a program’s operation. It also serves as archival storage” (Bidgoli, 2010). Main memory includes RAM, and cache RAM. Secondary memory are nonvolatile and used mainly for the storage or large amounts of data. They come in the form of magnetic discs and tape. Case Study Some of the major advantages or Linux are its low cost or no cost. Linux is free! You can download Linux off many repositories online. Linux is known for its stability and performance. You rarely have to reboot Linux compared with Windows OS. Linux is also the operating system of choice for people with older computers.
