Channel assignment strategiesChannelassignmentstrategiescanbeclassified as either fixed or dynamic. The choice of channel assignment strategyimpacts the performance of the system, particularly as to how calls are managedwhen a mobile user is handed off from onecell to another.2
Fixed Channel AssignmentEach cell is assigned a predetermined set of voicechannelsAny call attempt with in the cell can only be servedby the unused channels in that particular cell.If all the channels in the cell are occupied or busy, the call is blocked. The user does not get theservice. In a variation of the fixed channel assignment, acell can borrow channels from its neighboring cellsif its own channels are already occupied.3
Dynamic Channel AssignmentVoice channels are not allocated to different cellspermanently. Each time a call request is made, the BS requestsa channel from the MSCMSC allocates channel to the requested cell usingan algorithm that takes into accountThe likelihood of future blocking with in the cellFrequency of use of the candidate channelThe reuse distance of the channelOther cost functions.4
Dynamic Channel AssignmentMSC only allocates the given frequency ifthat frequency is not presently in use in thecell or any other cell which falls within theminimum restricted distance of frequencyreuse to avoid co-channel interference.DCA reduces the likelihood of blocking, thusincreasing the capacity of the system.DCA strategies require the MSC to collect realtime data on channel occupancy and trafficdistribution on continuous basis.5
HandoffoDo we need hand off in old mobiletelephony andwhy?
What is handoff ?
oWhat are important considerations to design ahandoffprocess ?
6
HandoffContd.Arrangements to fulfill the requirements of a successfulhandoff.Handoff must be given priority over call initiation request .Minimum usable signal for voice quality at the base stationreceiver is normallyfrom–90 dbmto–100 dbm.Optimum signal level at which to initiate a handoff should betaken in such away thatshould not be too large or toosmall. Where=Pr(handoff) – Pr(Min.usable)Ifis too large----- more handoffs-----Burden on MSCIfis too small ----- more call drops.7
