Homework 1 Due: Monday, October 4 by 5:00 PM You can turn in a hard copy in lecture, leave a hard copy in 279 Kerr Hall (=my office; just slip it under the door if I’m not there), or upload a file to SmartSite, via Assignments. However, if you choose to upload the assignment via SmartSite, it MUST be in PDF format . There are various ways of getting a file into PDF format. For example, a file that you have in virtually any other format can be converted for free via such websites as http://www.freepdfconvert.com/ . From any program on a Mac, just do File Print PDF Save as PDF. On a PC, you can install the free program DoPDF ( http://www.dopdf.com/ ). You can also write out the answers in pen and scan the results to PDF (in various ways). If you want to use phonetic characters in Word or another word processor, you can install a free phonetic font on your computer, such as Doulos SIL ( http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&item_id=DoulosSILfont ). The resulting file will still need to be saved as or converted to PDF somehow. Part One From the textbook, do the following exercises from Chapter 6:
