Bear in mind that the Korean words in exercise 3, like those in Part Two below, are written using the international phonetic alphabet (IPA). Part Two A. Old English . Consider the pair of sounds [h] and [x] in Old English (the language spoken in England, circa 900 AD). [x] is a voiceless velar fricative. A vowel with the symbol after it is a long vowel. Determine whether [h] and [x] are allophones of the same phoneme or not, and give the distributional evidence for your conclusion. If you conclude that they are allophones of the same phoneme, give the phonemic representations for ‘rough’ and ‘raven’ and formulate a phonological rule for the pronunciation of this phoneme [ha ː t] ‘hot’ [nixt] ‘night’ [hlo ːθ ] ‘troop’ [ru ː x] ‘rough’ [hlAd] ‘mound’ [ θ oxt] ‘thought’ [hrAvn ] ‘raven’ [ni ː xsta] ‘next’
