Unit 5 Individual Project 2 The Spoon An Artifact is something that has been created by humans for a practical purpose ( www.merriam-webster.com ). The spoon is a common utensil used in our everyday life, but where did it originated, and what was the purpose of this tool? The main purpose of a spoon is to put food to your mouth or for stirring. It derives from Old English meaning chip or splinter of wood. The Medieval spoon was made of horn or wood; however, around the 15 th century spoons were made from brass, pewter, or latten. Ancient Egyptians used ivory, flint, late or wood. It was not unusual to see Ancient Egyptians to carve the religion symbol into the spoons. The Greeks and Romans used bronze and silver when making spoons. All of these cultures were very different in the material they used in making and designing this utensil. Some spoons had a short curved handle, while others had long narrow
