Ryan McCusker Geology Portfolio Moon Movie First time on the Moon To everyone on earth the moon looks extremely smooth and at a distance even scientists believe it. But when astronauts first attempted to land on the moon they discovered that it was not smooth at all and it was rather rocky. Jim Head and Farouq El-Baz responsible for choosing the landing site for the first lunar lander. It took them a lot of time to figure this out because no man had ever been on the planet before so it was hard to determine all of the different circumstances. The first landing site was known as “the sea of tranquility” because it was so calm yet very intense because the astronauts were nervous. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Mike Collins were the first astronauts to land on the moon and Collins and Aldrin graduated from West point. It took 4 days to enter lunar orbit (250, 000 miles from earth) and while they traveled they had to deal with problems such as too much CO2 in the ship and getting sick
