Reading Assignments: Chapters 1 - Why Study Earth? and 2 - Minerals This week we will be discussing how and why geologists study the Earth and introducing plate tectonics, energy, and work. Next week we will focus on minerals. The reading assignments below indicate the reading that will be emphasized during class time and you will complete in-class and online assignments related to these concepts . Several of the questions at the end of the chapter (Confirm your knowledge and Confirm your understanding on pages 19 and 40-41) are particularly useful for you to focus on during your reading. Try to answer the questions listed below in your notes before attempting the Just-in-Time Activities “Scientific Method and Work” (due by noon on Wednesday, Aug. 24 th --“just in time” for class on Wednesday, so I can adjust the class period if needed to address troublesome spots in the material) and “Minerals- Properties and Bonding” (due by noon on Monday, Aug. 29 th ) on the website .

Reading for Wednesdays Class: Sections 1.1-1.6 Confirm your knowledge questions 2, 3, 7-10, 12-13. Confirm your understanding questions 3-5 and 8. Reading for Monday, August 29th: Sections 2.1-2.6 Confirm your knowledge questions 4-6; 10-12, and 14. Confirm your understanding questions 2 & 6. Writing down the main topic of each paragraph in your notes or jotting questions and relationships in the margins will help you learn and cement the material as you read. When you are done with a section, reflect on what you have learned and what else you need to learn to understand the topic. Successful learners look up terms they do not know and seek out alternative sources of information (instructor, classmates, websites, other textbooks) when they are confused about a topic....
