How do Sociologist collect their information. Opinions seems factual. Validity of the information that is provided. We should not consume information, Not systematic. Someone’s opinion 10 different ways how non-scientific ways are emerged. 1. “Chicken soup gets rid of a cold . . so I will use chicken soup to get rid of my cold.” – tradition. Not scientific. Debunk tradition to determine what is valid and invalid. 2. “Weak magnets can be used to heal many illnesses; I read it one day in the newspaper”— Second hand knowledge. Knowledge from authority. Not scientific. Those in power may be giving us information to hurt us/confuse us. Critiquing authority, challenging authority. 3. “The car that hit the cyclist was dark brown” —first hand experience, casual observation. Ex. Jury cases. Witnesses cannot always be reliable. 4. “If you work hard you can get ahead, like my parents.”—generalization. Limited sample. That sample may not be representative of a community at large. 5. “I’m right because I can’t think of any contrary cases.”—selective observation, not scientific because it is biased. 6. “Mr Smith is poor even though he works hard. Disabled people are the only exception of the rule that if you work hard you can get ahead.” Qualifier. Qualifying the statement. Leading the way out for a different result. Qualification. 7. “If the winner of the NFL from the previous year the stock market will go up. “—doesn’t make any sense. Illogical reasoning. Some events may occur in tandem. Ex. When people go to the pool, people tend to eat ice cream. One does not cause the other. 8.
