Assignment 1: U.S. House of Representatives The representation of the U.S. House of Representatives is based upon the population. In this assignment, I would like you to fill out this sheet with information regarding YOUR House of Representatives member. I want you to use the district of the state you currently hold residency in. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you are welcome to use the House member from the House District you live in when you are not at school. If you do not live in the U.S., use the representative who represents the physical place you live (i.e. where your house/apartment is located) OR use the representative for your home government. If you are from a territory (e.g., Puerto Rico), you are welcome to use its delegate to Congress. You can locate the House of Representatives at: www.house.gov . Type in your zip code and it should tell you the name of your house member. You will probably need your full zip XXXXX + 0000 (9 numbers total). If you don’t know your full zip, the house website will direct you to http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp which will allow you to find out your full zip code. If you have trouble locating information on bills your Congressperson has supported, look at http://thomas.loc.gov/ This particular website will be the most useful: http://thomas.loc.gov/bss/d109query.html Here’s how to locate bills from this website: Go down to Sponsor/Co-Sponsor and find your House Member For the 109 th Congress, few bills have been introduced so far So, after you located your house member, click on search and some bills will come up (i.e. as of 2/9/05 Lamar Smith has introduced 2 bills) If your Congressperson has not introduced legislation in the 109 th yet, look at the 108 th Congress If you use the 108
