Unformatted text preview: URINARY SYSTEM COMPONENTS • 2 kidneys - form urine • 2 ureters - conduct urine to urinary bladder • urinary bladder- temporarily stores urine • urethra - conducts urine to the exterior KIDNEY FUNCTIONS • Produces urine with nitrogenous waste (urea, uric acid, ammonia, creatinine) and other excretory substances • Regulates blood volume and pressure • Regulates osmolarity of body fluids • Secretes renin - activates angiotensin II → aldosterone pathway • Secretes erythropoietin - stimulates erythrocyte formation • Regulates acid-base balance • Detoxifies free radicals and drugs • Gluconeogenesis UREA • Most abundant nitrogenous waste in blood • Formed indirectly from proteins • proteins → amino acids → amine group removed (deamination) → ammonia that the liver converts to urea Anatomy of Kidney • Nephrons are the functional units • Lobe of kidney = pyramid and the overlying cortex NEPHRON • Glomerulus- capillary network • Glomerular capsule- cup-shaped • Proximal convoluted tubule – has simple cuboidal epithelium with brush border • Nephron loop- U shaped - has descending + ascending limbs – thick segment has simple cuboidal epithelium – thin segment has simple squamous epithelium • Distal convoluted tubule- has cuboidal epithelium with few microvilli - attached to collecting duct Renal Corpuscle Glomerular filtrate collects in capsular space,then flows into renal tubule Juxtaglomerular Apparatus...
