GORGIAS PHILOSOPHERS Presocratics : HERACLITUS o Relativist/Subjectivist Can’t trust your senses The only permanence is change o “No person can step in the same river twice” Presocratics: Zeno Zeno’s Paradox of the Arrow and Motion A reconstruction of the argument (following Aristotle, Physics 239b5-7): o When the arrow is in a place just its own size, it’s at rest. o At every moment of its flight, the arrow is in a place just its own size. o Therefore, at every moment of its flight, the arrow is at rest. Zeno’s Paradox of the Line and Motion o If a thing moves from one point to another, it must first traverse half the distance. o Before it can do that, it must traverse a half of the half, and so on ad infinitum . o It must, therefore, pass through an infinite number of points, and that is impossible in a finite time.
