Physics 2524, Discussion 2, Solutions 8/30/2011 The forces between charges (electrons) in modern electronic devices can have a significant impact on the device operation. You are working with a group of interns to understand the size and importance of these forces. Note: Electrons have a charge q = -e = -1.6 x 10 -19 C and mass m e = 9.1 x 10 -31 kg. A) The lengths in modern devices are on the order of l = 10 -7 m. If two electrons are this distance away from each other: a. Draw the Coulomb force vectors for each electrons b. Compute the magnitude of the force on each electron c. Is this a large force for the electron? Explain One of your fellow interns points out that electrons are alone, but generally spaced along wires or other structures with other electrons. You create a model “wire” using a line of 5 electrons equally spaced on a line as shown. B) Consider the following conversation between the other students: Student 1: “The net electric force on q is now five times larger because there are now five electrons exerting forces.”
