Unformatted text preview: MECH 5120/6120: Combustion Homework: Due 22 September 1. Text problems 4.8, 4.14, and 4.15 (note that H and Br are radical species). 2. A low–temperature chain mechanism proposed for the oxidation of CO in the presence of water vapor is as follows: CO + O 2 k 1-→ CO 2 + O O + H 2 O k 2-→ OH + OH CO + OH k 3-→ CO 2 + H H + O 2 k 4-→ OH + O H + O 2 + M k 5-→ HO 2 + M (a) Using the steady state assumption, formulate the rate law for the formation of carbon dioxide. Take HO 2 to be stable. (b) Using your rate law, specify the condition at which the mixture becomes explosive in terms of the appropriate rate constants and C M . (c) Using values of the rate constants for the above reactions given below, estimate the explosion temperature as a function of total pressure. Plot the temperature vs. pressure for pressures between 0.1 and 2 atm. Be sure you get the units right on the rate constants. The third–body concentration can be estimated from the ideal gas law at the given temperature and total pressure.concentration can be estimated from the ideal gas law at the given temperature and total pressure....
