Chapter 2 Outline Ma Elements cannot be broken down chemically into other substances CHON make up 96% of living things Compounds contain two or more different elements in a fixed ratio Elements properties The smallest unit of an element, has the following components Proton postive and in nucleus Neutron neutral and in nucleus Electron negative and outside of nucleus Neutral atom has equal numbers of electrons an protons Atomic Mass Isotopes Radioactivity energy or matter given off by unstable isotopes Shells Orbitals Molecules Chemical bonds form when atoms interact and complete their valence shells. Covalent bonds Electronegativity Non-polar covalent bond Polar Covalent bond Ion measured in daltons and is roughly equal to the sum of protons and neutrons differ from each other in neutron number and therefore atomic mass have a characteristic energy level. Electron distribution determines the chemical behavior o an atom. An atom that has an incomplete outer shell, the valence shel, is reactive.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
