The Symbolic Nature of Social Reality 21:06 Culture Complex system of meaning that defines the way of life for a group of ppl or  society and is passed from on generation to the next We attach meaning to it Includes language, gestures, beliefs, values, attitudes, norms and material  objects (there are overlaps) Consists of material (tangible) and non-material (intangible) components Cultural universals Cultural traits that occur across all groups or societies Non-material culture: language System of symbols, each with a meaning that can be strung together in a  infinite number of ways for the purpose of communicating abstract thoughts Limitless Non-material culture: Gestures The ways in which people use their bodies to communicate with one another Non-material culture: beliefs Collectively shared understandings regarding what is considered to be true or
