It is responsibility. A good manager does things right. A leader does the right things. Doing the right things implies a goal, a direction, an objective, a vision, a dream, a path, a reach . Managing is about how Leadership is about what and why Leadership is creative, adaptive, and agile Leadership looks at the horizon , not just the bottom line o Whole System Thinking- Senge The Fifth Discipline - leader as designer, teacher, steward Most important role in the metaphor of leadership is leader as designer- what kind of path are you creating Systems influence everything in their structure/impact everyone elses actions As a teacher youre helping people grow, both professionally or personally impacts the organization when you take the time to help someone leader as a steward in the way that they are also responsible for the morals of the organization Wheatley Leadership and the New Science a system is composed of parts, but we cannot understand a system by looking only at its parts. Legos- implication of stacking because of ridges Something that can be expanded because its a modular piece with edges that are the same Make sure you dont presume that the parts define the whole The parts is not the whole but it does lead us there we need to observe the whole system. Processes for developing awareness of a whole system: A mind-map o Central idea in the center and then branching out and creating constructs and then branching out again to more detailed imagery and ideas A time-line o Help us see the whole o Communicate o Give us an overview of whats going on in the system over time Stories o Sketches- Visually represent how the film is going to move through time Collages o Misfits- dont fit perfectly o Easily added Self awareness Connected to the truth of who one is Connected to ones stakeholders Connected to the environment o Psychology- Goleman Concept of emotional awareness Awareness of self Awareness of self in relation to the world Principle-Centered Leadership Model Four roles of Leadership- pathfinding, aligning, empowering, modeling Leader of victim? Either we lead confidently and effectively, or we become.. Principle leadership is more like a compass than a map o Always points due north, rather than being turned around o Compass is timeless (maps change with time) o Inner values are your compass that you carry with you are not determined by other, but by you (unlike a map) o Very dynamic (map-static) o Compass as a metaphor o Handout- 4 roles of leadership Pathfinding (trust) Leaders scan their environment, identify key Aligning (trust)...
