Review your lecture notes. 1. How does the Cowan et al. article relate to concepts we have discussed in class? Briefly describe the general methodology used for each experiment (IP, TLD) and the results of each experiment. What are the practical implications of this experiment? Specifically, how can you apply these results to education? 2. Describe the Atkinson and Shiffrin Model 3. Describe Craik and Tulving s Depth of Processing experiment. In what way does ʼ this experiment compare or relate to the Atkinson and Shiffrin Model? What about Baddeley s Working Memory Model? ʼ 4. Describe Baddeley s working memory model (including the episodic buffer). Be ʼ able to describe each component and provide an example of the phonological loop, visuospatial sketchpad, and the central executive. 5. What are the components of the serial position curve? The serial position curve is composed of the position of the sequence and the percentage of words recalled. The words remembered at the beginning of the list show the primacy effect. The words remembered at the middle of the list are intermediate (less likely to be recalled). The words at recalled at the end of the list show the recency effect. 6. Describe how working memory relates to intelligence. The higher the working memory capacity, the greater the intelligence of the individual. 7. Define verbal learning. What forms of verbal learning exist? Are there any problems associated with verbal learning? If so, what are they? Verbal learning is the memorization and retention of lists of words. It is concerned with the acquisition and retention of such items in an effort to describe the basic laws of learning. The forms of verbal learning are: serial learning (ordered), free recall (non-ordered), and paired associates (one stimulus, learned word response). Problems: Cue overload: cues can compete for retrievability, which results in interference and memory failiure. Available memories (100% memory): exist in memory store, but cannot be necessarily retrieved.
