Learning: Module 24 Reinforcers o Reinforcer = any event that increases the frequency of a behavior can be tangible – food or money can be intangible – praise or attention can be an activity – getting a study break or getting to use the family car o Reinforcers vary by person – what motivates one person may not motivate another o Reinforcers can be: Positive or Negative Primary or Conditioned Types of Reinforcers o Positive = providing a stimulus in response to a behavior o Reward = pleasant stimulus given in response to behavior getting money for doing chores o Negative = removing a stimulus in response to a behavior o Reward = removing an unpleasant stimulus in response to behavior stopping water boarding when the suspect gives information o Primary = unlearned stimuli getting food when hungry having a painful headache go away o Conditioned = learned through association with primary reinforcers wanting money because you’ve learned money buys food to reduce your hunger Reinforcement Timing o Rats (and other animals) do NOT respond to delayed reinforcers o Humans do respond to delayed reinforcers Part of development is learning to delay gratification – children as young as 4 will defer a small reward immediately in exchange for a bigger reward tomorrow. But sometimes small, immediate consequences override our ability to delay gratification o Especially true the longer away the reward will be presented (also depends on the
