Fiske’s People’s Culture As distinguished from the Frankfurt School Fiske says that resistance is a kind of reinterpretation. This is opposed to the FS that says we should end all corporations. Fiske would respond and say that its happening all the time by the people. there’s no reason to go against “the man” like FS suggested believed that pop culture is “contradictory to its core” Areas of focus “bottom-up” culture: people define culture, not the corporations Control and resistance We are all active in pop culture Saw that one could resist the force of hegemonic meanings because they could create their own meanings There is no dominant popular culture, only multiple responses to domination assigning attention to certain aspects of pop culture is an act of interpretation Fiske is opposed to the Frankfurt School resistance idea FS allowed for zero room for personal choice Role of interpretation and authorship Fiske asks the question: “ Who writes the script?”
